Cyclist flees police, says he couldn’t afford the fine

A food delivery cyclist who ran a red light in Prague 3 last week led police on an unusual chase through city streets — all because he later claimed he couldn’t afford the fine.

The incident began when officers from the Emergency Response Motorized Unit spotted the cyclist riding through a red signal at the intersection of Husitská and Trocnovská Streets. Officers observed him nearly hitting a passing car. Police immediately attempted to stop him using lights and sirens, but the man ignored all commands and kept fleeing.

Police released dashcam footage of the chase, adding silent film-style music to highlight the unusual and almost absurd nature of the incident.

The cyclist repeatedly changed direction, rode onto sidewalks, weaved under bridge supports, and entered opposing traffic lanes and a one-way street — again narrowly avoiding a crash.

At one point, a food transport box attached to the bike came loose but remained tethered and was being dragged behind the bicycle along the pavement. Even then, the cyclist refused to stop.

In Vítkova Street, one officer jumped out of the patrol car in an attempt to intercept, prompting the cyclist to change direction again. Officers finally managed to block his path with a patrol vehicle, while an officer on foot approached from the opposite side and detained the fleeing cyclist.

The suspect, later identified as a 23-year-old foreign national, stated to the officers that he fled because he didn’t have enough money to pay the fine for the alleged traffic violation. Instead, he now faces a much higher penalty in a administrative proceeding.
