Apartment fraud scheme targets foreign owners, suspect sought

Prague police are looking for a man who allegedly tried to sell several apartments that didn’t belong to him. In one case, he advertised a flat on Smrčkova Street in Libeň for CZK 9 million. However, the actual owner had no idea it was being offered for sale.

Investigators say the man specifically targeted properties owned by foreign nationals, especially citizens from former Soviet countries. These owners often live abroad and may not check their properties regularly.

To make the scam believable, the suspect sent imposters to meetings with interested buyers. These stand-ins pretended to be the owners and showed forged identity documents. The suspect also posted listings on popular property websites and used the alias Tomasz Demianowski. He listed a Czech phone number ending with 641 that he used to contact several real estate agencies in Prague.

Detectives from Prague’s 8th division are now asking the public to help identify him. Anyone with information should call police at line 158.

Authorities also say these may not be isolated cases. They believe the man could be working as part of a larger, organized group.
