According to preliminary data, 43 people died in traffic accidents across the Czech Republic in April—making it the deadliest month of the year so far. The figure represents a sharp increase compared to April 2024.
Pedestrians accounted for the largest number of victims, with 28 deaths—eight more than in the same month last year. On a more positive note, fatalities among motorcyclists dropped to six, down from 13 a year ago.
Police cited the main causes of fatal accidents as excessive speed, driver distraction (including mobile phone use), and failure to yield the right of way.
Officials noted that spring typically brings more vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. They urged drivers to stay alert and follow traffic rules, stressing that each statistic represents a real person with a family and a story.
“Prevention begins with each of us,” authorities said.
