Stolen car recovered hours after theft

Officers from the emergency response unit recovered a stolen vehicle on Sunday, just hours after it was reportedly taken from a street in Prague 2, police say.

According to police, the car’s owner had left the keys in the door and walked away. A 45-year-old man, said to have a long criminal record, allegedly noticed the opportunity and drove off with the car.

Police stated that the owner later reported the theft at a local station, estimating the damage at several tens of thousands of crowns. Officers entered the vehicle into the national database, and patrols reportedly spotted it later that day in Prague 8. Police say they stopped the car, detained the driver, and conducted a drug test, which returned positive for amphetamines.

The suspect allegedly admitted to taking the car. Police said he is now under investigation for theft and reckless endangerment under the influence of an addictive substance.

The owner, who was called to the scene, reportedly thanked the officers and told them she hadn’t expected to see her car again—calling them “miracle workers.”
