Waste fire northeast of Prague triggers large emergency response

Firefighters responded Wednesday evening to a large fire at a waste site in Benátky nad Jizerou, northeast of Prague. The blaze, which was reported around 6:30 p.m., involved both landfill machinery and piles of discarded wood material.

According to the Central Bohemian Fire and Rescue Service, crews from across the region were dispatched after the alarm was raised. Upon arrival, the incident commander escalated the alert to a second-degree fire alarm, prompting additional units to respond.

Authorities said the fire affected a total area of approximately 200 by 200 meters. Within that zone, a concentrated pile of waste wood — roughly 40 by 40 meters in size — was burning intensely.

Firefighting operations are continuing into the evening. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
