A 26-year-old foreign national suspected of being part of an international migrant smuggling network was arrested in Prague’s Záběhlice district, according to a statement released by the Prague police.
The arrest was carried out with support from a tactical unit and the police air service, following an investigation launched in cooperation with German authorities.
The case originated in Germany last spring, when detectives identified a group allegedly smuggling migrants from non-EU countries into Slovenia and Germany. The migrants, who reportedly lacked any valid documents or visas, were said to have paid hundreds of euros for the journey.
German investigators traced one suspect to Czech territory and issued a European Investigation Order. Czech detectives from the Extremism and Terrorism Department tracked his movements and organized the arrest.
During a subsequent search of the suspect’s residence, nearly CZK 100,000 in cash and extensive evidence were reportedly seized. The man remains in custody pending extradition to Germany, where he could face up to ten years in prison if convicted.
