The event, called “Safely with a Smile”, took place Monday morning on Cíglerova Street in Černý Most. First-graders were taught the basics of safe crossing by police officers and BESIP representatives. Drivers who followed the rules received smiley stickers and drawings from the children.

But around 10 a.m., officers stopped a 67-year-old man near a pedestrian crossing used daily by pupils. He tested at nearly two per mille of alcohol, police spokesman Jan Daněk reported. The man was taken to a police station and now faces charges of endangering public safety under the influence of alcohol.
