Man wanted for taking phone left behind in taxi

Prague police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who kept a valuable phone forgotten by a passenger in a taxi. The device, worth nearly CZK 30,000, was later switched on briefly, but when the owner tried to call, she was answered with insults before the call was cut off.

The case is being investigated as concealment of an item.

The incident happened at the end of August around 7 p.m. Two unknown men entered a taxi, and one of them noticed a phone on the back seat. Instead of handing it to the driver or attempting to return it, he slipped it into his pocket.

Detectives from Jižní Město have secured clear camera footage from the taxi, but the suspect has not yet been identified. Police urge anyone who recognizes him—or the man who accompanied him—to call the emergency line 158.

Under Czech law, concealment of an item (zatajení věci) is a criminal offence committed when someone finds a lost or forgotten thing and keeps it instead of returning it to its owner or handing it to the authorities. The law treats this as unlawful enrichment, even if the finder did not steal the item directly. In this case, the suspect faces up to one year in prison if convicted.
