Prague rail theft causes three-hour delays, suspect detained

A theft of 70 meters of signaling cable near Prague Main Station paralyzed one of the city’s busiest rail corridors on Sunday morning, leaving dozens of regional and international trains delayed by up to three hours.

The disruption began at 5:20 a.m. on the tracks between Prague-Vršovice and the city’s central hub. According to Railway Administration (SŽ) spokesperson Martin Kavka, the thief was caught on-site by railway employees and handed over to the police.

Operations were restricted to a single track for most of the day, forcing Czech Railways and other carriers to cancel multiple regional lines.

Technicians spent the morning repairing the severed safety equipment. While the value of the stolen copper is relatively low, the scale of the disruption and damage to critical infrastructure means the suspect could face up to eight years in prison.

Full service is expected to resume around 3:00 p.m.
