Gunman killed after deadly shooting at town hall in northern Czech Republic

A shooting at a municipal office in Chřibská, a small town in the Děčín district, left two people dead on Monday morning, including the attacker. According to the Czech Police, the victims include one woman and a police officer who was injured during the response.

The incident began around 10:25 a.m. when emergency calls reported active gunfire inside the town hall. Authorities immediately deployed a massive force to the scene, including first-response patrols, a tactical intervention unit, and a special riot unit. Within an hour, police confirmed the building had been secured and the shooter “eliminated.”

Preliminary reports indicate that at least three other people sustained injuries in the attack. While the immediate danger has passed, investigators and forensic teams remain on-site to determine a motive and piece together the timeline of the assault.

The Czech Police have set up a crisis intervention hotline at +420 974 421 158 and dispatched a team of psychologists to provide support to witnesses and victims’ families. “The building is now safe,” the police stated in their latest update, though they continue to urge the public to avoid the immediate area to allow emergency vehicles clear access.

Chřibská, a quiet town near the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, is rarely the site of such violence. This shooting comes as the Czech Republic remains sensitive to public safety following a mass shooting in Prague late in 2023.

Local officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or the shooter.
