A New Year’s celebration turned tragic in Prague just minutes after midnight when a 46-year-old man suffered catastrophic injuries from a professional-grade firecracker.
Police officers responding to a call at K Modřanskému nádraží found the man in critical condition. According to the official report, the explosion resulted in the complete amputation of his right hand and the partial loss of his left hand. He also sustained a severe open wound to his abdomen.

First responders from the Modřany district, assisted by a motorized emergency unit, applied a tourniquet to the man’s arm to stem the massive bleeding before paramedics could stabilize him. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Investigators identified the explosive as a Category F4 firecracker. Unlike standard consumer fireworks, Category F4 devices carry a high hazard level and are legally restricted to professionals holding a valid pyrotechnic license.
Czech police emphasized that handling these devices without certification is not only dangerous but illegal. Unauthorized use can be classified as “illicit armament,” a criminal offense that carries a potential prison sentence.
Following the incident, authorities issued a stark reminder to the public regarding pyrotechnic safety. They urged residents to strictly follow manufacturer instructions, avoid alcohol when handling explosives, and never attempt to use professional-grade devices without a license.
“One wrong decision can change your whole life in a second,” the police statement read, noting that the danger extends beyond the user to anyone standing nearby.
