The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) has issued a warning for very severe thunderstorms expected to move across the Czech Republic from the west on Monday evening as a slow-moving cold front advances through the country.
The warning is valid from 5:03 p.m. until midnight. Meteorologists expect thunderstorms capable of producing torrential rainfall of around 60 millimetres, hailstones larger than 2 centimetres and wind gusts between 70 and 90 km/h.
According to ČHMÚ, the storms may trigger flash flooding, particularly in hilly terrain. Rapid runoff could overwhelm small streams and dry riverbeds, while underpasses, basements and roads may become flooded or blocked by debris. Strong winds could uproot trees, damage property, disrupt power supplies and affect transport.
Authorities also warned that lightning and large hail pose a significant safety risk. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, close windows and doors, avoid flooded areas and never drive through flowing water. Motorists should reduce speed and exercise extra caution during the storms.
The latest forecasts and radar imagery are available through the ČHMÚ mobile app and on the institute’s website.
