Suspect arrested at Prague airport over online threats of mass violence

A man suspected of making repeated threats of violence against women in Prague and staff at a psychiatric hospital was detained after arriving in the Czech Republic from Argentina, according to Czech police.

Police said detectives from Prague’s extremism and terrorism unit documented the case in early June after the suspect allegedly spent around six months posting online threats of physical attacks and murder. The threats reportedly targeted women travelling on Prague trams as well as healthcare workers at a psychiatric hospital in the capital. Authorities said the man also spoke about taking his own life after carrying out the attacks.

According to police, the suspect publicly praised the perpetrator of the 2023 shooting at the Charles University Faculty of Arts and claimed that his own actions would have even more serious consequences. Investigators said his statements became increasingly severe over time, raising concerns that he could act on the threats after returning to the Czech Republic.

Based on those findings, prosecutors approved his detention. Officers from a specialized intervention unit arrested the man immediately after he disembarked from a flight at Václav Havel Airport Prague.

Following initial criminal proceedings, the suspect was transferred to the care of a psychiatric hospital, where he remains, police said.

The case highlights authorities’ efforts to investigate threats originating abroad when there are concerns they could lead to violence in the Czech Republic.
